Piilo for strings (2025)

24/11/2025

Piilo for strings is a new version of the Piilo written for saxophone (2021).

Piilo was first composed for the saxophone. The original saxophone piece was commissioned by Kalle Oittinen and published by Fennica Gehrman. In my peer-reviewed doctoral article, I explored the possibilities of using contemporary techniques in pedagogical Piilo. To support familiarization with the piece, I created interactive Piilo cards that encourage musicians to play, improvise, and compose using various techniques.

Piilo drew its musical inspiration from a childhood game in which the seeker knows that the hidden person is nearby, but the hidden person does not yet want to be found.

Piilo for strings has been arranged from the original Piilo using contemporary string techniques. The work was commissioned by the Pirkanmaa Music Institute and its composition was supported by the National Board of Education (OPH) and the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
